Compact Espresso Machines With Commercial-Style Portafilters

FAQs
A commercial-style portafilter is a handled assembly that holds a filter basket and locks into the machine’s group head. It lets you fill, distribute, and tamp ground coffee by hand for a hands-on home barista experience. The term describes the design, not a commercial-use rating.
Basket options vary by machine. Non-pressurized baskets, also called single-wall baskets, rely on the coffee puck to provide resistance during brewing. Pressurized baskets add resistance through a restricted outlet. Check the included basket types rather than assuming a commercial-style portafilter comes with one or the other.
Start with a clean, dry basket. Add freshly ground coffee according to the basket’s recommended dose, distribute the grounds evenly, and tamp on a level surface. Brush loose grounds off the rim before locking the portafilter into the group head.
A spouted portafilter directs espresso through one or more outlets beneath the basket. A bottomless portafilter leaves the basket’s underside exposed so you can watch espresso flow directly into your cup. Replacement portafilters must match your machine’s group-head connection; commercial-style designs are not universally interchangeable.
Remove the used grounds after brewing, then rinse the basket and wipe away coffee residue. Remove the basket regularly to clean underneath it and, on spouted designs, clean the outlets too. Follow your machine’s care instructions for detergent use and soaking, especially when the handle contains wood or other nonmetal materials.
