FAQs
A portafilter basket is the removable metal insert that holds ground coffee. The portafilter is the handled holder that houses the basket and locks into your espresso machine’s group head.
Single-wall baskets have one perforated layer at the base. Double-wall baskets, also called pressurized baskets, have a perforated inner layer and a second outer layer with a restricted outlet. Check your machine’s documentation to identify which type it uses.
Remove the used grounds, rinse the basket, and wipe away remaining coffee residue with a soft brush or cloth. For occasional deeper cleaning, follow the manufacturer’s directions for using an espresso equipment cleaner, then rinse thoroughly and dry.
Keep clean, dry baskets in a dedicated tray or divided drawer near your espresso machine. Group them by basket type and keep a separate spot for used accessories so your next setup starts with everything in order.
Ridged baskets have a groove around the outer wall that engages with the portafilter’s retaining spring. Ridgeless baskets have a smooth outer wall without that groove. These terms describe the basket’s construction, not whether it is pressurized.
